Modelling the Water Content of the Sugarcane Stalk
نویسنده
چکیده
This study models the amount of water stored in the millable stalk as a function of the dry weight of the stalk structures and of the stored sucrose. The correlation was highly significant (r=0.98, n=30). Structural material was equated to the difference between the stalk total dry weight and sucrose. Knowing the effect of the water deficit on the water content of the cane, the deficits were compared with the residuals in the above regression and it was shown that the use of the soil water deficit did not improve the relationship found.

Lateral movement of water and sugar across xylem in sugarcane stalks.
Laterally connected vascular bundles in the nodes of sugarcane (Saccharum species cv. Pindar) stalks allow a rapid redistribution of water across the stalk should the vascular continuity be partly disrupted. Tritiated water supplied to the roots exchanged rapidly between the xylem and storage tissue so that net movement up the stalk was slow. The half-time for exchange in a labeled stalk was ab...

The consumption of bioethanol as biofule may reduce greenhouse gases, gasoline imports. Also it can be replaced with lead or MTBE (Methyl tert-butyl ether) that are air and underground water pollutants, respectively. Plants are the best choice for meeting the projected bioethanol demands. For this scope, a comparative analysis of the technological options using different feedstocks should be pe...

Corn stalk can be used as an alternative non-wood raw material to produce cellulosic dissolving grade pulp. In this work, the potential of corn stalk in the production of dissolving pulp (alpha-cellulose) was investigated. It was collect ed from a corn stalk farm of Kermanshah, Iran. The sequences of experimental work were: water and acid prehydrolysis at 160˚C for 30min, followed by Kraft pulp...
متن کاملSilicon reduces impact of plant nitrogen in promoting stalk borer (Eldana saccharina) but not sugarcane thrips (Fulmekiola serrata) infestations in sugarcane
The stalk borer Eldana saccharina Walker (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) is a major limiting factor in South African sugarcane production, while yield is also reduced by sugarcane thrips Fulmekiola serrata Kobus (Thysanoptera: Thripidae). Borer management options include appropriate nitrogen (N) and enhanced silicon (Si) nutrition; the effect of N on sugarcane thrips is unknown. We tested the effects ...
متن کاملEffects of drought and recovery from drought stress on above ground and root growth, and water use efficiency in sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.)
Physiological traits associated with drought tolerance are useful as surrogate traits for drought tolerance. Information on the association of root traits and water use efficiency (WUE) and plant growth in sugarcane is rather limited. The objective of this study was to evaluate genotypic variation for root traits, WUE and growth characters of above ground parts of sugarcane. A 2 × 10 factorial ...
